On 5th June 2026, Wajibika Centre for Rural Development joined communities, development
partners, local leaders, teachers, and students in commemorating World Environment Day 2026 at
Mundika Secondary School, Busia County. Held under the theme “Healing Minds Through Human
Respect and Environmental Freedom,” the event brought together stakeholders committed to
environmental conservation, climate resilience, and community well-being. The event was
organized by Wajibika Centre for Rural Development in partnership with SHOFCO, One Youth
Voice, Kenya Red Cross Society, and the Matayos Sub-County NG-CDF Office. Through
collaboration and shared responsibility, the partners demonstrated that sustainable environmental
action begins at the community level
The event was spearheaded by Director Reagan Otieno and Project Manager Vincent, alongside
Coordinator Jane Adungo, Assistant Coordinator Maurine Ngere, and team members Synthia
Ochola, Maurine Onyango, and Nancy Atieno. Activities included an environmental awareness
procession, market clean-up exercise, tree planting, and interactive discussions on climate action
and environmental conservation.
Tree planting formed a major highlight of the celebration. Students, community members, and
partner organizations planted trees as a long-term investment in environmental restoration,
biodiversity conservation, and climate resilience. The exercise reinforced the importance of
protecting natural ecosystems while empowering young people to become environmental
champions
The celebration also provided an opportunity for dialogue on environmental conservation,
responsible waste management, climate adaptation, and community-led solutions to environmental
challenges. Participants emphasized the need for continued awareness creation and stronger
partnerships to address climate change. As the newly planted trees grow and environmental
awareness continues to spread, the impact of the event will continue to inspire environmental
stewardship across Busia County. Wajibika Centre for Rural Development remains committed to
